The Benefits of Movement Training

“In January 2017, I walked into the newly renovated Movement Studio at RVC with a boot on my right foot and splints on both hands. I felt discouraged and out of shape, having injured my ankle the previous spring, not taken proper care of it, and having had bilateral carpel tunnel surgery a few months earlier.

Today, less than a year later, I’m doing handstands, maneuvering on a balance beam and, outside of the gym, running and gardening again.

I feel better than I’ve felt in years thanks to Mike St. Laurence, my Movement Trainer. From the first visit, Mike has helped me regain confidence in my body, inviting me to move in ways I had never imagined. He understands the dynamic relationship between different skeletal and muscular systems as well as between my mind and my body.

While working on pressure points and learning about referred pain, I’ve learned how to take better care of my muscles, tendons and joints. In the process, I’ve become more flexible and much stronger.

I’m 52 and planning for the future. Since the birth of my first child in 2000, I’ve been plagued with twisted ankles, various forms of tendonitis and weak wrists. Ten years ago, I stopped playing tennis and squash, two of my favorite sports. Exhausted by the onslaught of injuries, I committed to healing.

Initially, Mike and I met twice a week, using all the cool machines and strategies inherent in Pilates practice. What appealed to me most about being in the new studio was the core focus on movement.

The Reformer is not some weird torture device, but is a thoughtfully designed machine that allows you to literally re-form your body by moving the way it is meant to move.

At first, doing simple walking-like activities on another Pilates machine, the CoreAlign, provided me an opportunity to relearn how to walk. Now, however, Mike is helping me retrain my stride so that I can run more efficiently. And then there are all the balls, bands and straps that we use to roll out sore muscles, strengthen my shoulders and retrain my arms.

Mike and his colleagues create a supportive and inviting environment to play. Indeed, I feel like a kid in the playground for the first time, doing what my body tells me to do, and honoring the joy that it brings.

This coming year, I can’t wait to play squash and tennis again, confident that my wrists and ankles will be strong and flexible. Thank you Mike and RVC for supporting my on-going health.”
