Back Strength + Pain Relief: Training at RVC

For the first time in decades, I can honestly say that back pain is no longer a part of my life.

I first injured my back as a child, when I torqued it too much going over the high jump. Ever since, my back has caused me problems from minor to sometimes quite severe. Because I have a high threshold for pain, and have been fairly athletic, I was mostly able to push through the discomfort. But still, occasionally it would interfere in my ability to be active.

For example, when my back was particularly acting up, I would stop running, cycling, or doing yoga. But, pain, to some degree, was nearly constant. Even though I saw orthopedists, chiropractors, and physical therapists, I was never able to become pain-free. I just figured that I would have to live with pain for the rest of my life.

Then, about summer, 2014, at a time when I had re-injured my back, I worked with an excellent physical therapist. My back improved under her care. But, as had happened in the past, I only made so much progress. She recommended strength training. I had done very little formal strength training. Thus, I knew that I needed to work with a trainer.

I went to see Fitness Consultant, Kate Rappaport, who did my initial consultation. She recommended I see Personal Trainer, Scott Prince. I figured I would give it a try, but had no idea that it would lead to the kind of recovery that I have experienced.

I have been working with Scott for one year now. The gains over the course of this year have been tremendous. When I started, despite my yoga practice and decades of regular athletic activity, I couldn’t believe how weak I was in certain areas of my body, especially my back.

There was so much that I couldn’t do in the beginning. However, with steady, regular training with Scott, I found that I started to do things I never would have thought possible. At first, I thought of strength training as something that I “had” to do to improve my back. But, to my surprise, I actually found that I enjoyed it, and now look forward to every training sessions.

I love feeling stronger, but the most important result of this process is that I am nearly free of pain. My back is better than it’s ever been. Building greater all over body strength, and especially for me, hamstring, hip and shoulder/upper body strength, has made me feel heartier and less injury prone.

It has been such a relief to no longer live with chronic pain. Without it, I can now channel energy that used to go to coping, into much more productive pursuits. Strength training with Scott Prince has been a critical factor in my overall health and sense of well-being, and I look forward to continuing into the future. It’s been well worth it!
